The Second Wave (c. 1970 the Present) The second wave of feminism sparked strong challenges to psychology s ideas about women. Feminists in psychology openly challenged psychology s choice of research topics, its theoretical constructs and research methods, and its theories about women s mental health, its modes of diagnosis, and its therapeutic interventions. From a feminist perspective, many aspects of psychological knowledge have been androcentric (that is, male-centered). Historically, men have been studied much more often than women have. For example, classic studies of personality by Murray (1938) and Allport (1954), as well as McClelland s landmark study of achievement motivation (McClelland, Atkinson, Clark, & Lowell, 1953), excluded women. Moreover, psychological theories about many aspects of cognition, social behavior, emotion, and motivation have been in uenced by cultural biases against women (Crawford & Unger, 1994). Women s behavior has often been judged against an unacknowledged norm based on white, middle-class men. Women s behavior, more often than men s, has been seen as biologically determined, with researchers overlooking the different social situations of women and men. Feminist psychologists quickly moved beyond critique to focus on generating new knowledge about women and gender. The psychology of women and gender is now a varied enterprise that encompasses virtually every specialty area and intellectual framework within psychology, that spans international boundaries, and that has produced a large body of research and scholarship. Our goal in this chapter is to describe and evaluate representative approaches to research in the eld.

Now consider this example. A loaded 500-pair VF trunk cable extends across town. A new switching center is to be installed along the route where 50 pairs are to be dropped and 50 inserted. It would be desirable to establish the new switch midway between load points. At the switch, 450 circuits will by-pass the of ce (switch). Using this D/ 2 technique, these circuits need no conditioning; they are full-load sections (i.e., D/ 2 + D/ 2 1D, a full-load section). Meanwhile, the 50 circuits entering from each direction are terminated for switching and need conditioning so that each looks electrically like a full-load section. However, the physical distance from the switch out to the rst load point is D/ 2 or, in the case of H loading, 3000 ft or 915 m. To make the load coil distance electrically equivalent to 6000 ft or 1830 m, line build-out (LBO) is used. LBO is described in Section 5.5.2.1. Suppose that the location of a new switching center was such that it was not halfway, but at some other fractional distance. For the section comprising the shorter distance, LBO is used. For the other, longer run, often a half-load coil is installed at the switching center and LBO is added to trim up the remaining electrical distance.

In Table 1.9, the ESD stress was increased above 2000 V HBM. From the TDR method, various parameters begin to distort as the ESD stress increases. Above 2000 V, shifts occur in the transmission port tested. Distortion of the transmitter is noted in the TX pin with a 2X increase in TX DJ (TX DJ increased from levels of 30 to 72 and 131). Hence, from this TDR methodology, the metrics are evaluated for the various signal level parameters [8]. A second means of observation is the output eye test. After the input transmitter/ receiver circuit has its TDR measurement, the system is repowered and cycled at the 2 Gb/s data rate. From the output eye the distortion of the output characteristics is another way of evaluation of the ESD impacts. The timing of the optical network is impacted by the ESD pulse as a result of the impact on the differential input of the input SFF chip. Experimental observations showed that, in some cases, it was hard to determine the change in the TDR input characteristic before and after ESD stress, yet observations were visible in the subtle changes in the output eye test [8].
